Prolotherapy (Proliferative/Regenerative Therapy), is a procedure that stimulates the body’s healing processes to strengthen and repair injured and painful joints and connective tissue (tendons and ligaments). This is done by a directed injection with a solution of dextrose to the injury site causing a focused inflammatory response which stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanism. The injected solution encourages the growth of new ligament or tendon fibers, resulting in a tightening of the weakened structure and decreased pain. Additional treatments repeat this process, allowing a gradual buildup of tissue to restore the original strength to the area.
-
Generally anyone with injury to tendon or ligament tissue can benefit from this therapy.
-
If the tear to the tendon or ligament is complete or a full tear (third degree), then this therapy can have limited value.
-
The treatment course varies depending on the nature and severity of the injury. A typical treatment course is 4-6 treatments at 2-3 week intervals.
-
Adjusting activity schedule to allow for several days of minimal stress on the injured tissue/area following the injection is best. This gives the therapy the best opportunity to have its effect on healing the injury.
Following an anti-inflammatory nutritional plan for one week prior to therapy can be helpful.
